Office Professional 2013

All of Microsoft's applications for use on one PC.
Office Professional 2013 is designed to help you create and communicate faster with time saving features and a clean, modern look. Plus, you can save your documents in the cloud on SkyDrive and access them virtually anywhere.

What’s new in this release of Office?

The 2013 versions of familiar Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint include new features that help you create, communicate and work efficiently from virtually anywhere. In addition to updating the traditional Office suites, Microsoft has developed brand new subscription versions of Office, specifically designed around the way customers use Office. Each new subscription offer will include the 2013 versions of the Office applications, for example Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus cloud services such as Skype world minutes and online storage with SkyDrive.
Subscribers will also receive future rights to version upgrades as well as per-use rights across multiple PCs or Macs and select mobile devices.1 Note: The Office applications you can use across PCs, Macs and other devices vary by platform.

What is the difference between the Office 2013 suites and Office 365 plans?

Microsoft Office is still the name Microsoft uses for its familiar productivity software. Office suites have traditionally included applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. All Office 2013 suites include the latest versions of the applications, for use on a single PC.

Microsoft uses the name “Office 365” for products that include cloud services, such as additional SkyDrive online storage, Skype minutes for home use, Lync web conferencing or Exchange Online hosted email for businesses. Cloud services are features that are enabled over the Internet. Most Office 365 plans also include the full-featured Office 2013 applications, which users can install across multiple computers and devices. All Office 365 products, such as Office 365 Home Premium, are paid for on a subscription basis, annually. Active subscribers will receive future rights to version upgrades as a benefit of their subscription. Entitlements vary by product.

What it includes:

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, and Publisher.
  • Office on one PC for business use.
  • One time purchase for the life of your PC; non-transferrable.
  • 7 GB of online storage in SkyDrive.
  • Free Office Web Apps1 for accessing, editing, and sharing documents.
  • An improved user interface optimized for a keyboard, pen, or touchscreen.

    1Avoid like the plague!
    By Michael A. Sutcliffe
I have been an office fan since the beginning. NO MORE! Microsoft has just made a draconian change to its office licensing scheme.

Until now you could install your office product on two pcs. Typically a desktop and note book. And when you bought a new pc you could remove office from the old pcs and install it on the new pc. This is a balanced, logical, fair and reasonable approach.

Now, Microsoft in its infinite wisdom has decided you can only install office 2013 on one pc. AND THIS LICENSE IS NOW ONLY GOOD FOR THAT ONE PC. YOU CAN NEVER INSTALL IT ON A SECOND PC AND YOU CAN NEVER MOVE IT TO A NEW PC. YOU ALSO NEED TO PURCHASE A SECOND COPY FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK. THIS IS A UNBALANCED, ILLOGICAL, UNFAIR AND UNREASONABLE APPROACH.

So, for example, say you install office 2013 on your two year old desktop and the PC dies two days later. Tough luck you would need to buy a new version of office for that new PC. This is UNBELIEVABLE and whoever in Microsoft came up with and approved this policy should be fired. The only way to stop this insanity is to not buy this product until Microsoft gets the message and changes this incredible bad policy.

From articles that I have read this policy is suppose to INSPIRE me to use there cloud based office 365 subscription service. It has failed to do this and instead all it has done is upset and alienate me to the point I will not buy or use either.

2If you already have Office 2010:not worth the time, effort or money to upgrade...
    By 35-year Technology Consumer
...especially if you have to pay the full retail price.

Office 2013 does not offer enough improvements to take on the hassle of moving to the new version (which I deliberately did not call "upgrading"). If you are already using the Office 2010 suite, deliberate carefully about both the expense and the subsequent tweaking it will take to get you back to the customization you like.

Two stars if this is an upgrade path from Office 2010; three stars if it's your initial Office installation.

I installed Office 2013 Professional on an Dell XPS420 computer with a recently installed Windows 8 Professional OS, a dual-core 3 GHZ processor and 4 GB RAM (32-bit environment).

At installation, I was promoted to first remove my existing Office 2010 suite. After doing so, installation of Office 2013 took approximately 10 minutes. Although cosmetic changes appear in the user interface (mostly in a "flattening" of controls on the toolbars), the overall presentation will be familiar to users of Office 2010.

Hint: if you have many commands placed in your Office 2010 applications Quick Access Toolbars, export them before you uninstall. You can later import them into the 2013 programs. Why this couldn't be scripted into the 2013 install process (along with removal of the earlier version) is another question.

Microsoft claims an array of new features in Office 2013. The biggest one that is readily apparent is that Microsoft would love for you to join them on the cloud via its online SkyDrive and Office 365 subscription services. Oh please. I already bought the productivity suite, and could have done without the additional marketing. Plus: every single time you look at the Office Ribbon, the big "Sign In" button will be visible on the right side. Bad idea, Office team: please don't add clutter to an already complicated user interface.

Newly installed programs installed in a recently refreshed operating system should work flawlessly. The user experience while working with various Office suite data files (primarily Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access for me) is basically the same as with 2013. Immediately after installation, every time I closed an application, Office offered a "...(application name) has stopped working" and the usual MS prompt to check for solutions or close the program. Of course it stopped: I just closed it. Online searches, including at Microsoft, have presented nearly a dozen options, most specifically focused on add-ins. I accepted the "search online for solutions" option during a Word shutdown. Apparently Office found one, and the remedy took place across all applications. However, this error was *NOT* part of the user experience in the Office 2010 suite that I uninstalled 10 minutes before the switch to 2013...and users shouldn't expect the latest version to contain more annoyances (which is what this is) than its predecessor. Very unsatisfactory.

Office 2013 claims increased ease of handling graphics and editing .pdf documents. I've experimented with both, and in my opinion, the jury is still out.

I am extremely lucky in being able to obtain this product under an academic license via my employer for fraction of what "civilian" users must play. For the deep discount I enjoyed, this behavior is an annoyance. If I had paid full price for this, "annoyed" would be far too mild a way to describe my reaction.

This is a version suited only for users who insist on having the latest version of anything. If you want to continue to use your productivity applications in way you are accustomed to, I'd stick with 2010.

If I were running a Windows 8 computer with a touch screen, I'd start to consider this worth advancing from Office 2010. Check with your employer, professional organizations, non-profit or educational institution you may be affiliated with; they may have volume licensing arrangements with Microsoft that can make this much more affordable.

And, as always, you may be able to get the vast majority of your Office-like functions completed (including creating and editing Office file types) using the open-source --and *free*-- LibreOffice.

2Little or no value for those who do not need to work via "the cloud"
    By Yoda
Microsoft Office 2013 differs from the previous version of Office, basically, in one very significant way. That is it permits the user to work with "the cloud". Documents can be placed in the cloud and then worked with from computers that also have Office. Hence no need, like in the old days, of having to carry around hard disks, CDs, etc. with one's working files between client locations or from home to office. Of course, the use of the cloud does entail some risks as data stored there is not as secure as on one's external hard disk or cds (assuming there is not a possibilty that the hard disk or cds can be stolen).

On the negative side Office 2013 really does not offer that much functional improvement over its predecessor, especially for the $400 price tag. There are a few, basically, tweaks, here and there in the interface but nothing really radical. Nothing really, beyond these tweaks, in terms of wordprocessing capability (Word) or data processing and analysis (Excel and Access).
