Forerunner 620

It’s the next best thing to having your own personal running coach. Forerunner 620 features recovery advisor, race predictor and VO2 max estimate so you can train smarter. When used with the HRM-Run monitor¹, the 620 also gives you feedback on your running form by showing your cadence, ground contact time and vertical oscillation. For indoor training, the built-in accelerometer tracks distance, so you don’t need a separate foot pod.

It Knows Your Potential

VO2 max screenForerunner 620 can estimate your VO2 max, your body’s maximal oxygen consumption. Knowing your VO2 max is a great way to measure your physical fitness and improve your performance. When used with a heart rate monitor, the 620 crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability to estimate your VO2 max. The number itself indicates the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute, per kilogram of body weight at your max performance.
A color gauge on the watch shows how your VO2 max data compares to other runners of your gender and age range. Based on your VO2 max estimate, the 620 can predict your race times for several distances. This can give you a time target for your next race, assuming you’ve completed proper training.

Rest Day or Run Day

With Forerunner 620, you don’t have to guess how much recovery time you need between workouts. It knows your physiology based on your heart rate data, so it factors this against your last workout and then shows how much time before you are fully recovered and ready for your next hard running workout.
When wearing HRM-Run, the 620 provides a recovery check, which is a real-time indication of your state of recovery within the first several minutes of your run. When you’ve completed a run, the recovery time shows how long before you should attempt another hard workout. Color coding on the gauge makes it easy to interpret — green means you’re good to go. When you see red and a recovery time of more than 3 days, you might consider taking a rest day or just doing a light recovery run.

Following Your Form

The 620 is the first GPS running watch that provides feedback on your running form by reporting multiple metrics. When used with the HRM-Run monitor¹, the 620 reports your cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time. These metrics are called running dynamics, and they effect your running economy.
The HRM-Run has an accelerometer, which measures your torso movement as you run to compute these metrics. Cadence is the total number of steps you take per minute, left and right foot combined. Vertical oscillation is the degree of “bounce” in your running motion, measured in centimeters. Ground contact time is just like it sounds — the amount of time your foot spends on the ground during each running step, measured in milliseconds. A color gauge makes it easy to see how your running dynamics compare to other runners.

Get Connected

Forerunner 620 can send your data wirelessly to Garmin Connect. It can transfer the data through the Garmin Connect Mobile app on your smartphone. You can also set up one or more Wi-Fi hot spots, and the 620 will automatically sync with Garmin Connect when in range.
It also features live tracking, which allows your friends and fans to follow along and see your stats in real time. Pair your phone with the 620 throughout your run to use LiveTrack. You can also share your victories by posting updates through social media with the Garmin Connect Mobile app. And, for real-time coaching as you run, the 620 is compatible with free training plans at Garmin Connect. By regularly connecting your watch to Garmin Connect, you'll also benefit from a faster GPS fix due to satellite data that will be sent to your device automatically.

5Seriously, this is a great watch.
By someguy254
I bought this Forerunner 620 after having been disappointed by the previous model, the 610. The 610 was big, bulky, and it was very beta when it was first released. And although the 620 was probably released a little too early as well, I'm happy to say that this is a great heart rate monitor, don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Pros: It's no bigger than the watches a man would typically wear nowadays and it is very light; the band itself is quite comfortable. The touch screen seems to be more responsive than the 610 and satellite acquisition was instantaneous (I never even saw it search, it was just ready to go when I pushed start). Pairing it with my iPhone was extremely easy and the LiveTrack feature (where you can invite others to watch your progress live on the interweb) worked flawlessly. Uploading my workout date to Garmin Connect, both via my phone and over wifi, has proven to be a little hit or miss a couple of times but if that is my only complaint then this watch is still far superior to anything else on the market. The fact that you can upload over wifi is pretty impressive in itself and I only expect things will improve with future firmware updates. (It bothers me a little to even say that because I used to have a huge problem with all of these tech companies releasing expensive unfinished products, in effect, and expecting the customer to just put up with it but I've mellowed out a bit on the subject.) The sensor tracks heart rate just fine, as expected, and the cadence and oscillation readings are useful, if those metrics matter to you. The 620 rates my VO2Max in the orange, "fair" zone, which I'd say is accurate (and a great feature). Also, I'm glad that Garmin got Firstbeat's Training Effect measurement right on this model. The charger attaches to the watch perfectly, unlike some previous Forerunner models.

Cons: None to speak of, really. I wish the Garmin Connect website wasn't so stark and soulless and it could use more social networking features, like the Nike+ site. That being said, the information displayed is top notch and very much geared towards serious runners.

I've read reviews online from people complaining about foot pod calibration, that the screen "gives" too much, that the watch feels too "cheap", and that the colors on the screen aren't very brilliant. Yeah, I guess the screen "gives" when you push on it but I never would have thought anything of it if I hadn't read those reviews beforehand and the same goes for it feeling "cheap"; I still don't consider them flaws (and I half-suspect that Garmin designed the screen that way for better touch recognition). To be honest, out of all the features of this watch, the colors on the screen are the least important to me. And as far the foot pod goes, Garmin added an internal accelerometer to the watch so that nobody would need to use a footpod. Which reminds me, go ahead and add internal accelerometer to LiveTrack, uploading-via-wifi, and VO2Max rating as another reason why no other HRM compares to this one.

Seriously, I don't think you could go wrong buying this.

5Absolutely Flawless!!!
By ssaslow
I will make this short and sweet. This is hands down the best running device I have ever used and I have had them all. I have been running for over 40 years and have run more marathons than I can count. I was using a Forerunner 610 for the past year and this is leaps and bounds beyond that device. WiFi is flawless. I ran 2 hours this morning in a snow storm, walked in the house and automatically my run was uploaded to Garmin Connect. This was much more cumbersome with the 610 and the ANT stick. This watch is so much lighter than the 610 and the issue with the band popping off has been resolved with the new design. I cannot understand why people are complaining about the poor color display or the plastic screen. Think about this for a minute. What value would a hi-res OLED display have for a runner in bright sunlight (absolutely none as you would not be able to see the display). Even more important if this device had a glass capacitive screen it would be useless as a running device. In the summer when your hands are wet with sweat you would not be able to control the screen or in the case of today when I had three pairs of gloves on I needed a pressure sensitive screen in order to actuate it.

Bottom line if you are a runner and want a serious HRM with GPS that can provide you with a significant amount of accurate data look no further.

5This is a must have!!
By Karen A Mueller
I just got this as an upgrade from the 405cx. I was a bit worried after reading some not so great reviews complaining that it felt "flimsy" and that the screen gave too much, was hard to read and colors weren't "brilliant" enough.
The watch arrived Monday evening and it took me less than 5 minutes to do the initial set up and figure out menus and change settings to my preferences. I'm fairly tech savvy, but still I found it very simple. The screen is a bit hard to see in dim light but I turned on the backlight and it was fine.
I took it out this morning for its first run. In daylight it is perfectly easy to read the screen.
I was a bit concerned that my metrics would be way off given that it's a complete blizzard in Northern Michigan today with 20+ mph winds and blowing and drifting snow. My pace was a good 30 seconds per mile slower than normal but when I got home and looked at run data I was pleasantly surprised to see that my metrics were all well within what they've been measured at in the past and even my VO2 max and race prediction times were right on despite a slower pace on today's run!
You have to have a run saved before you can set up the wireless upload and that took less than 5 minutes as well this morning using my Macbook Air.
So far, very impressed! Don't be swayed by any negative reviews...if you want a state of the art watch with awesome data, get this!!
